Vetri (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia

Vetri is the most famous restaurant in town, it’s been called “Possibly the best Italian restaurant on the east coast” by Mario’s Batali, some even claimed it’s the “best Italian restaurant in America.” Getting a table was difficult, but I managed to squeeze myself in on a Monday on that same morning. Bearing that much hype, it’s almost bound to disappoint in some ways…?

Vetri

I love the exterior, it looks like a small, lovely neighborhood bistro. The interior is small, and the ambience is a bit too dark at night…I could barely see my food.

Their menu sounds very inspiring and unpredictable (and constantly updating). I wanted to try everything! You can do half-portion of the pasta to try more.

Vetri

Golden Sweet Onion Crepe with White Truffle Fondue 14   This is like French onion soup as a pastry. The cheese and onion flavor are so strong that I couldn’t tell the truffle. It’s very tasty but I was expecting something more unfamiliar.

Vetri

Stuffed Tagliatelle with Foie Gras and Sweet Onions. It sound more interesting than it actually taste. It was overwhelmingly loaded with oil and cheese that I couldn’t really taste the foie gras. The cheese flavor (a very strong, stinky kind) is too dominating. The portion is too tiny that I couldn’t really get much impression of.

Vetri

Chestnut Fettuccine with Wild Boar Ragu. This one totally blew me away~ perhaps because I’m a lover of chestnut and fettuccine. The wild boar flavor is strong and gamey, but the fresh chestnut pasta compliment it well, making it a full and rich dish. I wished I’ve  ordered the full portion.

Vetri

Spinach Gnocchi with Shaved Ricotta and Brown Butter. The texture is incredible: light, soft but not melty. It’s delightful to chew on these little things, though the small portion left us unsatisfied.

Vetri

Mille-Feuille. Not the best I’ve had (the custard could have been more flavorful but it’s still very good.

So there’re hits and miss in my experience, and the price vs portion did end up bothering me a little (I was expecting absolute perfection?)  Their pasta tend to be a bit too greasy (and too much cheese) for my likings. Best Italian on East Coast or America? Not for me. I still think Italian food is more enjoyable in a brighter, warmth environment with bigger portion in general. However I do find the menu very inspiring and interesting, so I’d definitely want to come back.

Kanella (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia

More wonderful meals at the Greek Cypriot Kitchen Kanella! (check out my 1st dinner and brunch there). I didn’t get to order their entree the first time, I can finally try it.

Kanella

Dip of the Day with Grilled Pita Bread. One is Yam and the other is Garlic with herbs, both are incredibly tasty and full of flavors. I couldn’t stop eating them and filled up my stomach quick.

Kanella

Arni: Grilled Top Loin of Lamb with Macedonian Giouvetsi 24. Very good, simple but light flavor, though the meat texture was a bit rough.

Kanella

Whole Fish of the Day. Lightly flavored and nicely cooked.  If you worried about deboning, the server would do it for you.

KanellaKanella

We couldn’t resist and again got the Galatoboureko (filo pastry filled with semolina custard). We also tried the Hazelnut and Caramel Iced Nougatine. I was expecting a Nougat texture, but turns out it’s soft and melty like ice cream…nonetheless it was very good!

Kanella (Philadelphia)

Kanella

The authentic Greek Cypriot kitchen Kanella was one of my most favorites the last time I was there. I went back to try their popular breakfast. The space looks lovely in bright day light.

KanellaKanella

The place filled up immediately, reservation is a MUST. Greek Coffee.

Kanella

Malohwa: Pan Fried Savory Puff Pastry from Yemen, boiled egg, spicy Tomato Salad and Greek Yogurt. The Puff pastry is savory + sweet actually, crispy on the surface and sticky in texture. It reminded me of the Glutinous rice dumpling (hamm sui gok) from dim sum. It’s a good compliment to the very spicy tomato salad (cool it down with yogurt). Very good.

Kanella

Shaksouka: Two Eggs Poached in a Cumin Scented Tomato and Pepper Stew, with Grilled Bread. The stew is very delicious, simple yet complex tasting. Very satisfying.

Kanella

Galatoboureko: filo pastry filled with semolina custard. I got this last time and couldn’t resist but ordered it again. Still love it, still love soft chewy texture with crispy corners.

Later when I went back for dinner, a waiter told me that the chef didn’t like people taking photos of his food.

Bibou (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia, Favorite Food Entries

Bibou is a small neighborhood gem well hidden at the Little Saigon side of the Bella Vista neighborhood. It is a French BYOB place that has a $45 Four Course Prix Fixe menu on Sunday. All these BYOB and affordable Prix-Fixe, yup, that’s why I love Philly. Even though the owner and chef are French and it’s an authentic French Bistro, the name is Japanese (it means “beauty”), I wonder why…

BibouBibou

The space is small but they manage to fit in as much table as they can without feeling cramp. It did gave me a bit of a illusion that I was in some alley in Paris.

Bibou

The butter, OH MY the butter!!! It’s SO GOOD! The Echire butter has a subtle flavor and was incredibly soft and light. The little baguette are very good too. We couldn’t help but got a second serving.

We can choose from three choices from each course. My friend and I ordered different things so we can sample as much as we could.

Bibou

White Coco Bean Soup with Sauteed Baby Shrimp. The soup is delicate and tasty, and not heavy at all. It is perfect for winter.

Bibou

One of the choices for 2nd course is Rabbit and Garlic Terrine. Nice, fresh clean taste with a nutty flavor.

Bibou

Another 2nd course choice was Pan-seared Foie Gras, Poached Secket Pear in Red Wine, Duck Jus. Hmm…so good! It’s cooked perfectly and the sauce has the light, fruity sweetness that really made every bite a joy to eat.

Bibou

2nd course: Saint-Jacques: Pan-seared scallops, barley risotto, candied hazelnut with honey emulsion. The sauce might be sweet but it enhance the fresh flavor of scallop by 200%! This is so GOOD!

Ris de Veau: Seared Veal Sweetbreads, Crushed Potato, Yellowfoot Mushroom and Carrot Fricassee and Veal Jus. Very soft and tender. The mushroom that absorb the sauce are so yummy.

Bibou

The dessert are more classic flair. Lemon Meringue Pie. The lemon curd are a bit too sour for my likings.

BibouBibou

Vanilla Creme Brulee and complimentary Meringue

Their menu is limited, hence keeping the quality tight. I enjoyed the meal a lot and would love to come back.

We called for a taxi pickup but it never showed up. We waited and waited, so we ended up being the last customer. At one point I thought I’ll be stuck here forever (that I wouldn’t mind…)

Supper (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia, Favorite Food Entries

As I mentioned before Philadelphia’s dining scene is full of BYOB and small plate/tapas places. Supper seems to be just another one, but they’re also known for their breakfast. Moreover their menu sounds fun: classic American (grits, waffle) with multi-cultural fusion, not unlike Matyson but with a more casual flair .

Supper

We sat next to the open kitchen, and the chef asked me why I’m taking photos of the food. 🙂

SupperSupper

The bread is soft and fresh, very good! I can tell their breakfast must be GOOD. Sweet Potato Soup with Cinnamon Marshmallow, Apples & Sage. 8. As you see from the ingredients, the flavor leaned toward the sweet side. It’s almost like a dessert.

Supper

From the Hor d’Oeuvres menu: Soft Pretzels with Green Chile-and-Beer Fondue. Soft Pretzels is popular in Philly. It’s light and soft, yum!

Supper

Roasted Marrow Bones with Shallot Marmalade, Parsley Salad, Sea Salt, Lemon & Toasts. It smells wonderful~ The marrow bone is like an oily gelatin, like a very tenderly cooked tendon. The garnish are both sweet and salty. With the acidic lemon, this dish is surprisingly strong tasting.

Supper

Duck and Waffles: Crispy Cofit Duck Lg with Pecan Sage Waffle, Red Cabbage and Maple Bourbon Jus. Wow it is so sweet. But the taste is interesting, albeit the sweet overpowered the savory. I enjoyed it a lot though.

Supper

Spice Crusted Tuna. My friend’s fish dish.

Supper

Their dessert menu are American classics as well (Apple Cobbler, Bread Pudding, etc). We got the Maple Panna Cotta with bourban soaked Cranberries & Bacon Cookies. Again there’s the twist of sweet vs savory, but it is done in a much more subtle way than the meal. The texture is so smooth…I love this so much!

SupperSupper

Banana Bread Pudding with Nutella & Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Yum! Complimentary cookies.

There isn’t much subtlety in their flavors but the whole dinner was a very pleasant experience. I felt like a kid again with my sweet tooth satisfied even in savory dishes. Their dishes are almost like a “kidault’ interpretation of modern American cuisine.
