Sluka (Vienna: Ringstrasse)

//// By in Favorite Food Entries, Vienna

Out of the city center along the ring near the neo-gothic Town Hall, there’s Sluka, another historic confectionery since 1800s, frequent by famous clients like Sisi, Oskar Kokoschka…etc.

SlukaSluka

The interior looks like it hasn’t been update for a long time (and not in a good way) that it’s a little bit grandma-feel so we prefer to sit at the cozy outdoor tables. There are several sights like the Parliament and Volksgarden nearby but the cafe is on a quiet low key street with not much traffic.

SlukaSluka

Mocha: you put that little chocolate cup with cream into the black coffee. So cute! Melange. All great! I like how they always give you a glass of water when you order coffee.

They served these beautiful Open Sandwiches as well:

These bite size delights look so tempting in the display window so we had to order them. We randomly picked the most fancy looking ones. These small bites are so gourmet but a bit small. Just one bite and they’re gone.

Sluka

Pear Tart. Soooo good! I never have a pear tart this good in my life! *q* Light, fresh and have delicate sweetness mixed with refreshing fragrance.

Sluka

Cranberry mousse. This is really amazing! Perfect balance of sweet and sour. The mousse is silkily smooth and very fresh. I read that Sluka’s strength lies in their fruit cakes, based on this and the pear tart I heartfully agree. I kept thinking about this for days afterward.

Sluka

Sluka cake. Super good too! So fresh and multiple flavors. I think there’re chocolate, hazelnut and orange. Wonderful fragrant, light and moist texture.

Their poopyseed cake is one of Sluka’s most popular item, unfortunately it was sold out by the time when we’re there. In fact I saw the last piece being taken away as soon as we walked in. It’s a pity. Hopeuflly I’ll get the chance to try it someday.

This is my favorite Patisserie out of all the ones I tried in Vienna. In fact I enjoyed all 3 Sluka cakes more than Sachertorte. ^^;; Highly recommend, a MUST go!

Österreicher in MAK (Vienna: The Outer Ring)

//// By in Vienna

May 1st was Vienna’s national spring holiday, few of my top restaurant choices were closed for the holiday. The restaurant + bar Österreicher in MAK (Museum of Applied Art) was one of the few businesses that opened. In fact, we haven’t had proper Viennese dinner yet.

DSCN3801MAK

We sat at the patio area and…

MAKIMG_1739

It had a electronic ceiling window that opened up whenever the temperature got too hot (often opened too late though ^^;;).

MAKMAK

We found out later on the bill that, the breads + condiments were 2.8 Euro each (they gave us three portion for three people).

MAKMAK

Also on the bill: the utensils (& this table paper) cost 3 Euro each person. O_0 It’s definitely one of those wide eyes O-shape mouth moment. The wine Small Hill White 2007 & Merlot 2006 were fantastic though.

Their menu is divided into two section: Traditional Viennese and Modern. We tried both.

MAKMAK

From the traditional appertizer menu: Cream Soup of “Marchfeld” Asparagus. Wow! The Cream soup was incredible – it’s light, foamy, very delicious. Clear Beef Soup with Liver Dumpling. The dumpling taste… very livery. I would prefer it to be smaller in portion.

MAK

Modern Appetizer: Roasted Filet of Rabbit on Tarragon Polenta. Very good. The meat was tender and love the sauce. Their modern menu seems to have strong influences from French cuisine.

The Main Dishes:

MAK

From the modern menu: Crispy Pike-Perch on Preserved Potatoes. Fantastic! The fish was perfectly cooked. The sauce was creamy and light, very flavorful. The cucumber added a refreshing taste. The potatoes are good too. Very filling.

MAK

Also from the modern menu: Cheeks of Pork with Green Asparagus and Emperor’s Pudding. Soft and deeply cooked with flavors, very good.

MAK

Traditional menu: Zwiebelrostbraten, a pounded strip steak with Viennese onion roasted with sautee potatoes and mustard pickle. The traditional dishes were clearly different: the plating is non-dressy, color is monotonic and it’s all hearty meat/fried dishes. Very beefy, meaty and heavy.

MAK

Other than cakes, Austrian have other desserts as well. Modern Dessert: Iced “Malakoff Torte” on Egg Liqueur Sauce. It’s the Austrian almond tart in iced form. The flavor is quite similar to Tiramisu. Very tasty.

A guidebook recommended the modern side more, I agree. It’s a very pleasant meal (very good wine!) until the bill came and reveal all those ‘hidden fees.’

Cafe-Restaurant milo (Vienna: MuseumsQuartier)

//// By in Vienna

As we were stuffed from the rich breakfast, we would have multiple snacks and cakes during the day. After a few brutal hours at the Museums Quarter, we rested and snacked at the Cafe-Restaurant milo which is part of the Architecture Museum.

UNA

Gorgeous arabesques patterns and Turkish Vaulted Ceiling! Though the menu is actually a modern take of Austrian traditional fusion with western European cookings (mainly Italian). I didn’t see any Turkish dish.

UNA

Clear Tomato Soup with Mozzarella-Wild Garlic Dumpling: it’s so delicious! I don’t get it, it’s just a tomato soup, but it’s so delicious~ It’s full of different flavors.

UNAUNA

Viennese Potato Gulasch: more like sausage goulash (the potatoes are cooked till thick starchy stew). Very salty and trashy tasting but I still manage to gulp it down (slowly) because it’s very tasty.

UNA

Tomato-Basil Bruschetta.

Hollmann Beletage Hotel Breakfast (Vienna: Inner Stadt)

//// By in Favorite Food Entries, Vienna

Other than good food and museums (satisfying for the Shiele and Klimit fans in us), one of the top highlights of our Vienna trip was the boutique hotel we stayed for 2 nights called Hollmann Beletage. We had a hard time finding reasonably price good vacation rental at Vienna and most mid range hotels were fully booked. So we went a little over our usual budget to stay at this designy boutique hotel for two nights. It was all worth it! The room cost 150 euro a night which is not horrible but the weak dollar made it worst. The price included breakfasts, oh my it was a satisfying experience! See more pictures of the boutique hotel on my flickr.

Love the beautiful dining room for breakfast. Bright and cozy. A chalkboard on the wall reports the weather .

There’s a basket full of bread (all very good) and big jugs of sparkling water and orange juice on each table. The guests can just pick any seat and start digging in, a waitress would come by to take your orders for other drinks and today’s special. The coffee was very good.

Hollmann Beletage Hotel

As soon as we sit down the waitress brought us two plates of cheese, fruit and meat. Very generous amount.

Special of the day: Scramble egg with herbs.

2nd day’s cheese and meat plate. I like how they’re served on a wood board.

Special of the 2nd day: Egg in a glass with ham, cheese, tomatoes, horse radish and cress.

There’s also a bottle of champaign on a communal table for all

On another communal table there’s also standard breakfast fares like yogurt, granola, milk, cereal (love those little metal clamp canisters), pastry, apfelstrudel, fruits…etc etc.

We stuffed ourselves full that we didn’t have to waste touristy time to have lunch (instead we had cakes twice before dinner :P). The Hollmann Beletage hotel also got a wonderful restaurant around the building’s corner. It turned out to be the best dining experienced we had at Vienna, report coming soon. I highly recommend this hotel if you’re visiting Vienna. It got a great location too – just few blocks from the Stephansdom but in a quiet street.

Hotel Sacher (Vienna: Opera House)

//// By in Vienna

The next day we went to try the original Sachertorte from Hotel Sacher.
SacherSacher

The restaurant was full, so we went to their cafe side which supposed to have the same menu. The boutique + restaurant + cafe + bar combine area is bigger than Demel. The decor, however, was old school classical (not that pretty nor impressive though).

Sacher

Sachertorte from Sacher. Win hands down! I prefer Sacher’s than Demel’s. Rich chocolate and fruity apricot jam coat both stands out and compliment each other well. The texture is fresh and moist. I could now see the appeal of Sachertorte. Great with a cup of coffee.

SacherSacher

French influenced cakes: Chocolate Mousse and Apple Cake. The Chocolate mousse was so rich. Both were very good quality and tasty.

SacherSacher

We had so many coffee in Vienna that I couldn’t keep track what they were. They have lots of ‘fancy coffee’, most are creamy, sweet with liquor. All good~ I usually get Melange (with hot milk and whipped cream on top) or Grosser brauner (served with coffee flavor cream).

SacherSacher

We were actually hungry so we ordered soups as well (savory first, the sweets that follow would be more wonderful). Vienness soups usually served with dumplings or other garnishes. All the soups we had this trip were all surprisingly GOOD!

Potato Soup, so good and flavorful, it got a wonderful smell of baked potatoes and smoky bacon. Frittatensuppe: pancakes seasoned with herbs and cut into thin strips and served in bouillon. The pancake added a buttery flavor, almost egg noodle like. Very good!

Decor and location wise, I prefer the Parisienne-esque Demel over Sacher’s old school bourgeois vibe.
