Negiyaki: Okonomiyaki with lots of spring onions.

Okonomiyaki with squid, prawn, pork and soba(noodles). Very good!

We tried toppings of mochi(the white clump in the picture) and cheese(cheapy supermarket slice cheese), also with udon added. Didn’t turn out very well….

Famous Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki place that we were stupid enough to go on a freezing-cold Friday evening. When we arrived at 20:30, there were 20 people waiting in the queue…not being able to think of a plan B, we ended up waiting for an hour outside. -o-;;;;; The last order is 21:30, but after that people still kept coming and coming, asking if it was still okay and the staff had to keep turning them off. There are only counter seats and the food is cooked in front of us. Relatively healthy okonomiyaki style with very thin layer of batter as the base, an egg on the top, and lots of lots of cabbage in between. Major toppings are pork, squid and prawn. Soba(not buckwheat but noodles) or udon are usually added too. Since it has more cabbage and less batter compared to say Osaka-style, it is much less heavy. The shop is opened from 11am til 10:30pm - apparently the time between lunch and dinner during weekdays is pretty empty(weekend is busy all day).

Super popular Okonomiyaki restaurant from Osaka. We went around 5:30pm on a weekday and luckily there was no queue yet but the seats were already half-filled. After that the queue just kept getting longer and longer. They don’t take reservation so there is no other easy way other than going early on a weekday or be patient and queue. Once you are inside though, the atmosphere is quite relaxed and the waiters won’t try to hurry you or anything. All the food are cooked in the kitchen and delivered to your hotplate table for you to sprinkle seaweed or katsuobushi on top. The food are very nice in general, despite they are slightly on the salty side. Not the harder, more solid okonomiyaki I am familiar with, but the soft and liquidy kind. Other than the regular “sauce flavour”, which is easy to get tired of cos it is so sweet, you can also choose “Salt” or “Soy sauce” or “Ponzu” for some items. Four of us shared all the food and with 2-3 drinks each, it was about 2500yen per person.

ジャパン(もち・チーズ)。
“Japan”: Mochi and cheese okonomiyaki.
Originally from Osaka and this restaurant in Akihabara is its only Tokyo branch. The food is very good. The staff made everything for us so we just had to cut them up. The Tonpeiyaki and Omelette yakisoba are cooked in the kitchen, while the rest are made in front of us. We went around 6pm on a weekday and we got seats immediately, but when we came out around 7:30pm there was a queue waiting outside. Price is reasonable, the environment is clean and new, and the seats are comfortable. Definitely will go back.

お好み焼き スペシャル(肉ダブル、玉子、そば)、850円。もちをトッピング(ランチサービス)。
Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki, with pork, egg, noodles and cabbage. At lunch time you can get one more topping for free and I had mochi. Quite nice! Mayonnaise and sweet okonomiyaki sauce on the table for you to add yourself.
くるみ

肉玉いか天ソバ、950円。A very popular place specialised in hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, which has ingredients like cabbage and noodles added. I wanted to try this place long time ago but it doesn’t do lunch during weekdays, and dinner time has long queues apparently. Tried my lunch on a rainy and cold weekend afternoon, late around 2pm….and yup, it was quite empty! I had the most popular pork and squid and noodles one…it was very good! The first half I had it alone and the second half I added mayonnaise, cos I was afraid I would get tired of the same strong sauce taste….but it is too yummy to get tired! Though it would have been better if a few people went and shared different things~~
