Yabu (Culver City)

Found this hard to spot authentic Japanese Soba/Udon restaurant nearby where I worked. The place looked so tiny and blank outside that it took me awhile to spot it while driving. I never liked soba for its buckwheat taste and wheaty texture, though it might be because I never had truly good soba before.

Inside felt like Japan, packed with Japanese ojisans and salaryman. The left picture was my collegue’s Soba set. I got the Mizore, soba with Ikura and radish and seaweed. Pretty good! I still wasn’t too crazy about craving soba. I’d try their udon next time. I’m so grateful there’re authentic Japanese noodle place so closed by! *__* There’s a sushi bar inside as well.

Marouch Lebanese Restaurant (Hollywood)

//// By in 04: Los Feliz

DSC04200.jpgDSC04202.jpgDSC04241.jpgLast week we had a dinner party for Charle’s birthday at Marouch Lebanese Restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd. According to Charles who’s Lebanese, this place serves the best Lebaonese food in LA! The restaurant located in a quite ghetto area, many colleagues were quite worried about their “very nice” cars parking on the street. ^^;; The interior of the restaurant is very nice and cozy. We got 3 bottles of Chateau Ksara (Lebanese Wine), $35 each. There were about 18 (?) of us and we got 3 of their appetizers course Meza for six, $75 each.

2nd pix: Kebbeh, Lean veal mixed with crushed wheat, stuffed with seasoned ground beef and pine nuts, deep fried.
3rd pix: Falafel, ground garbanzo and fava beans seasoned and deep fried.
4th pix: Entrees: Shawarma Combination, a giant plate of very deliciously grilled meat: Beef, chikcen and Gyros (lamb). All the meat are so juicy, tender and just sooo yummy! They’re served with rice, pickleds and pita bread. We got 3 plates of this for our party.
5th pix: Mahalabieh, Lebanese rice pudding topped with pistachios and rose water. Very unique tasting, good!

Everything tasted really good, I was burstly fulled and felt very satisfying. The down side is that, I (and few other collegues, including the bday boy) gotta go back to work. 🙁 I had to work till 1:00 am >__<.

Ike Sushi (Hollywood)

//// By in 08: Hollywood, Favorite Food Entries

DSC04196.jpgDSC04197.jpgDSC04194.jpgMy friend took me to this small authentic “honest” sushi place which located in a ghetto strip-mall on Hollywood blvd. The place gets really crowded at night. They only do traditional sushi, it’s very good and fresh! We are soooo addicted to the Uni sushi! The uni taste sooo fresh and heavenly, I can’t get enough. The yellow tail sashimi is really good too. I went back there 2 more times already.

Been there long time ago (with Tomoko) and were underwhelmed by this supposedly famous udon place that were visited by lots of Japanese celebrities when they were in LA (the walls nearby doorway were fully patched with their photos and autographs). So here we are again. I had the Egg and Crab Udon, Joan had the Pork Cutlet Udon set. The pork cutlet was very good. I think it’s the soup that are too plain, too one-note strong salty water tasting.

Alcove Cafe & Bakery (Los Feliz)

//// By in 04: Los Feliz

DSC04163.jpgDSC04164.jpgDSC04143.jpgFound a very adorable place in Los Feliz! You line up to order food indoor first (love the interior~~) and they’ll bring the food to you. There’s a big courtyard and garden surrounding the cafe with tables, very cozy! There’s a gourmet market on the other side that sells Euro import groceries and cheese, and there’s a wine shop in the back. I’ve gone back to this place 3 times already :).

DSC04145.jpgDSC04146.jpg DSC04192.jpgTurkey Hummus sandwich, Apple and Brie Panini (the combination is wonderful!) and Spinach salad (love that it comes with bacon, apple, olive and avocado). All taste good! You can pick the sides, supposedly the onion rings are very good…hmm…next time.

DSC04167.jpg They have lots of cakes too, cheescake, chocolate cake…which looks predictable and boring, so we tried the red velvet cake which has bloody red sponge, out of curiously. ^^;; Turns out….yuck, no good at all. Their ice-blended coffee drinks are way too sickly sweet too.
