Devon (Monrovia)

//// By in 02: Pasadena, Favorite Food Entries

DSC00936.jpgDevon is located at the historic district of Monrovia with turn-of-the-century buildings. It is a fine French restaurant. The interior if full of huge tall mirror, burgundy wood walls and strange mixed of abstract paintings and chinese redwood chairs, but somehow still modern and elegant. Apple Martini $9 (we suck…for getting martini instead of wine at a French fine-dining restaurant :p I’m just more of a cheap-ass martini person)!

Joymart (Little Tokyo)

//// By in 06: Downtown LA

DSC00924.jpgDSC00926.jpg Drop by Joymart for dinner on Friday night after OT at work till Eight-after. Raw Tuna Salad with Ponzu sauce $8 and Bibimbap $8. And guess who we saw drinking beer alone there? Matt!!!! Yes that Matt from our fellow Artcenter term. It’s weird to see him alone without Lucas, the once inseperate-duo of our class. They lived at the Artist District thus always hang out at Little Tokyo. I got update about him from Lucas (yes they’re still living together) few months ago, and Matt told us he is still working at Sony (interactive department, he worked on the Spiderman 2 website). They treat him really well there, great $ and relax job. He still has the same moppy curly hair but it got a bit longer, messier (and greasier, seems like someone hasn’t wash his hair for days~~)

Mission 261 (San Gabriel)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel

moon.jpgDSC00909.jpg Two days ago was the Chinese Moon Festival. Coincidently I’ve been animating a moon (see pic) for the past few days on a project. We dined at Mission 261 for the first time there with dad (mom is still at Tibet).

DSC00910.jpg Shark Fin Soup $58 Haha when I was eating this I’ve been thinking of Vero’s Anti-Shark Fin soup project (see? it works!). I never have it enough to tell if this is good or not, but it taste good and LOTS of Shark Fins.

DSC00913.jpgDeep-Fried Prawn Balls with Salted Duck Egg Yolk 金沙脆皮蝦球 $23.85 This is simply one of the most yummy things I’ve ever had! So “golden sand” is a fancy term for the texture you feel in your mouth with the crusted Salted duck egg york. The Prawn balls are crisp and lots of subtle flavor that I can’t tell what other stuffs was used.

DSC00915.jpgBraised Spiked Sea Cucumber with Scallion 香蔥醬爆刺參 $23.85 The sauce flavor did not “sank” inside the Sea Cucumber enough. (sorry for the odd expression, I don’t know how to word that).

DSC00917.jpg $23.85 Forgot the name. It has ham, fish.

DSC00918.jpg Free moon cake, Five Mixed Seeds and Bean Paste. I don’t like this flavor at all ever since childhood. It has too much stuffs and odd sweet taste. My favorite kind is the traditional simple White Lotus Seed Paste with Salted Duck Egg Yolk (which we have a box at home)

BTW I read that paper lanterns is back in favor in HK. I remember when I was little, paper lanterns were gradually replaced by cheap ugly plastic ones that makes fancy electronic lights. Traditional paper lanterns were deemed as out-of-fashioned and unsafe (it was scary to carry it around with a candle burnng inside, especially when wind hit). The plastic ones are often shaped in the form of hit cartoon characters, hence more attractive to children. But now there’s a revival of traditional paper lanterns. Now there’s better designs. People bought them mostly for home decorations.

Mission 261 (San Gabriel)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel, Favorite Food Entries

DSC00892.jpgDSC00889.jpg

Mission 261 is an ambitious dim sum restaurant that’s aimed for slightly more ‘upscale’ experience. Although the traditional dim sum experience are lacking: no cart (order from check list), no fish tank, no loud chatterings, the food are much more delicate and finer tasting. And the price is okay. It’s not that much more pricey than regular dim sum place. Since it opened we never go to other dim sum places ever again. It locates at a preserved historic Spanish site, the place used to be a Spanish restaurant with these 100 years old grape vines all over. The interior is now a mix of classic Spanish and Chinese style.

They recently updated their menu with lots of new stuffs, so this time we mainly tried the new stuffs and didn’t get some of the regular favorites.

DSC00876.jpg

Cocktail Bun 雞尾包 $3.55
Pan Fried Turnip Pudding 煎蘿蔔糕 $3.55
Cocktail Bun is a Hong Kong tyle bread with coconut and custard stuffings. I listed Turnip Pudding among my top 3 most favorite food, and these are just GREAT~ so satisfyig ToT.

DSC00879.jpg

Steamed Scallop Rice Pancake 帶子腸 $5.85
The rice skin is very light and glassy, very fresh tasting scallop with special mixed tasty soy sauce

DSC00881.jpgDSC00882.jpg

Shang-hai style Siu mai 上海糯米燒賣 $4.25
Steamed Shrimp Dumplings 水晶蝦餃 $3.55
The two 101 items of dim sum culture. I’m too used to the regular pork Siu mai, this is just a ball of sticky rice (yes pan fried with sauce and peanut and lots of subtle taste but it’s still sticky rice~~). I grew up hating Shrimp Dumplings but still have to admit this is really really good~ the dumpling skin is truly crystal-glassy thin (yet sturdy enough) and the shrimps are top notch!

DSC00883.jpgDSC00885.jpg

Deep Fried Shrimp Colloid Balls with Cheese 芝士百花蝦球 $4.25
I think it’ll be more yummy if the inside was mayonnaise. The sauce is chili sour plum.

DSC00884.jpg

Steamed Rice Pancakes Topped with Diced Meat & Vegetables 滿天星腸粉 $3.55
Simple but not so simple. The diced thingy include Salty Egg yorks 鹹蛋黃, Pressed Dried Vegetable 榨菜, etc. Dippng sauce is Hoi-sin and seseme.

DSC00888.jpg

Steamed Sweet Crystal Buns 四式水晶包 $3.55 Green: Greentea, Beige: Lotus seed, Yellow: custard, Purple: Red bean. This is so so, as I never like Asian sweets.
