Phoreign (Sawtelle)

A new Vietnamese (Japanese owned?) restaurant was opened next to Blue Marlin and I finally tried it because someone told me their simmered pork is supposedly better than this. But I didn’t see it on the menu nor it looked like they’d have it!? The menu looked very generic and very simplified-for-American. The mushroom and springroll bun I had looks very Chinese, and the sauce was the disappointing hoi sin sauce…-__- (why not fish sauce?)

DSC00003a.jpg Watermelon juice, so cooling so sweet~ Chile Pellano: stuffed pastilla chili with queso ranchero, very tasty! The cover is fried battered egg. The guacamole is very fresh. Cheap quick lunch at this neighhorhood Mexican joint, very good! 😀

Cosmopolitan Restaurant

//// By in 05: US Other

We craved margarita for the entire day. Since we didn’t do any research and just drove around San Diego, we went out on an exit called “old town’ and arrived at this touristy historic state park. The 1800s preserved Spanish American village is full of folk art shops and bars/restaurants.

We randomly picked this one because it has shortest line.
DSC00054.jpgDSC00062.jpg
Traditional Margarita and Strawberry Margarita. Wonderful! Ceviche, has fish, scallop..etc. the chops are not as small as I like.
DSC00057.jpgDSC00064.jpg
Tortilla soup not like this one that I love… 🙁 . Ensalada de Carnitas: pork, sweet corn, orange segments, cherry tomatoes, jicama and avocado with mixed greens salad with pear vinaigrette. The pork are tender but still too much chewing….^^;;
DSC00059.jpg…because I ate too much chips. The salsa is very tasty, so fresh~ We weren’t hungry so we didn’t tried their entrees. We waited forever for the waitress to get the bill…-_-
I wonder if the one with long lines are the best Mexican restaurant there…should have waited…

Bino’s European Coffees & Crepes (San Diego)

//// By in 05: US Other

We drove 2 hours down to San Diego for a getaway over the weekend (a very last minute decision), we found ourselves nothing to do nor see in Coronado Island (errr ^^;;). However this is redeeming. 😀
DSC00037.jpgDSC00038.jpg
Hidden around the corner, once I stepped inside I knew this is my favorite type of cafe, on the other wall (not in photo) it is full of original artworks and art nouveau decor.
DSC00041.jpgDSC00043.jpg
We were too late and the cook has left already. However they still make crepe. Beef Ratatouille Crepe (right) and the owner’s recommendated Crepe a la Mexicaine (left), MY GOODNESS they’re DELICIOUS! Incredible! The mexican crepe has very fresh and yummy ranchera sauce. ARGH wish I lived nearby it.

Triumphal Palace (Alhambra)

Finally tried this new dim sum restaurant~ The interior is very ‘designed’ ^^;; Their banquet dinner cost up to $1,800! O_O I ordered my usual must-haves to compare the quality. They’re good but generally too light for my taste.
DSC00023.jpgDSC00024.jpgDSC00025.jpg
The Shrimp Rice Crepe‘s skin is so incredibly thin and won’t easily fell apart. Very good!
DSC00026.jpgDSC00028.jpgDSC00032.jpg
The Shrimp dumplings were underwhelm (thick skin, bland). The Custard Buns are different from usual, they mixed seseme paste in hence it has a sandy texture and very heavy.
DSC00031.jpgDSC00030.jpgDSC00033.jpg
There’re quail eggs underneath the fried tofu. The yellow dumplings on leaves are these szechawn desserts with sticky rice (mochi), with seeds, coconut and orange peel inside. multi-flavored and strong aroma, very nice! As for my favorite dim sum dish, pan-fried radish cake…is disappointing…little flavor and not much radish taste. 🙁
