Today a friend who is a sweets-lover took me around…90% of the recommended places on her hand-drawn maps are cake shops or parfait shops!! The old building pic is taken inside University of Hokkaido – really beautiful place!! Must be stunning in winter covered in snow. Each of us had a chocolate cake in the shop very near to the university. Then my friend was just telling me this great chiffon place nearby but once I saw it I wanted to try – turned out it tasted fantastic in spite of its plain look! I am not a big fan of chiffon cake but I really thought it was one of best ones I have had. Then the third shop was caramel and nuts parfait, again one parfait per person! The beef and cheese curry was bad though – she had never been to that shop before but it is famous apparently so we decided to try. At least it was cheap. Then the last shop we went was parfait shop that opens only at night, and there is only one person making the parfaits, waiting customers, doing the bills and everything – super busy and therefore the parfaits came very slow. We didn’t mind of course. The parfaits don’t look good at all! But they taste good, especially the one heavy heavy with rum. It is amazing that I ate so much this day yet I was not suffereing so much from a bursting stomach, maybe because we walked a lot, chatted a lot, that burned calories I suppose. But the word “diabetes” did come across my mind…hahaha.

HOKKAIDO DAY 4

The Euro building is a former government building, now there is a little history info center inside. The white cream thing is cheese with blueberry sauce inside – Hokkaido is famous for its cheese products. It is not tissue paper but a piece of cloth to hold the cream cheese. Hokkaido is a great place to eat seafood I think. But as a friend was telling me, the overall difference in quality and price of seafood between Sapporo and Tokyo exists, but the difference is slight. Afterall it is not in Sapporo that you do the fish-catching. ^^;;; So to have truly fresh and cheap seafood, you need to go to the sea. That’s what I want to do next time I go to Hokkaido. Though you definitely need a car….and probably well research of the seasons beforehand.Anyway, this day my friend left, so I had the two cakes alone in my hotel….kinda sad.

Last time I went to Hokkaido I tried crab sashimi for the first time and I was shocked how tasty it was! But you never see crab sashimi in Tokyo – the crab has to be super fresh you see. So this time since we were half giving up uni, we went hunting crab sashimi in Otaru. We went to a different sushi place first, my friend saw the show case and hinted to me “Let’s get out”. ^^;; So we were loitering along the “sushi restaurants street” and chose this place when it got late(lunch time) and we were really hungry. The uni was really bad, as expected, I wonder why we insisted ordering it…But oh my, the crab sashimi was really good~!! Better than the first time I had it. We tried tarabagani, the same kind of crab we had the previous night but this time raw, it was so good that I ordered one more later and the chef was so nice he gave me a big big piece. We also tried a different crab called zuwaigani, which was a little bitter but nice too. There was little piece of rice underneath the crab. We were very satisfied and went to have ice-cream again in 北菓楼 – which was definitely the best ice-cream I have ever had! So rich! I bought a lot of souvenirs(cookies, cakes etc.) in this shop too. The BBQ is Genghis Kan(成吉思汗), mutton barbecue, I have had it in Tokyo but it is more popular in Hokkaido. The lamb meat is not flavoured so it is just plain grill and dip sauce, but the meat is very tender and tasty and both my friend and I ordered a second round. The shop is super famous, always a long queue, but miraculously we went at the right moment that we didn’t have to queue. We shared the kimchi and the rice and were really stuffed. About 2000yen per person.

The first two shops are inside a small fish market in town. The first one where we had uni and ikura rice bowl and grilled crab miso is supposed to have been introduced on TV and stuff, and the obasan there kept hard-selling us this expensive 2600yen uni rice bowl, claiming it to be good while we were actually planning to order the cheap 1500yen uni rice bowl. We trusted her and ordered the expensive one…gosh it was so bad!! The uni was so tasteless, one of the worst uni I have ever had. The crab miso was good, though it is not difficult to make it good I suppose. Then we went to a second shop in the same market, trying to redeem some faith in Hokkaido’s seafood quailty. We had scallop, crab and uni. The crab was very sweet very good, the uni was much much better than the uni we just had in the first shop, yet it was still not the sweetest creamy uni that I know of!! Especially I went to tsukiji 築地 fish market in Tokyo a while ago and the “Hokkaido uni” I had was sooooo good and I couldn’t help setting it as a “standard”. We were so shocked, I mean it is the first uni we have in this trip and it is so bad…maybe uni is not the right season? We were planning to travel in Sapporo on that day, but we were just too traumatized that we changed our plan and took a train that goes straight to Otaru 小樽, which is a lovely town with a canal and is famous for seafood. We had apple pie and ice-cream – Hokkaido is famous for its dairy products so soft ice-cream is supposed to be good, and it turned out to be super good! The seafood place we went in Otaru for dinner was very famous and recommended by friends, so if the uni is not good in this place, then it is not good anywhere. It turned out that….the shop was not selling uni AT ALL because it is the wrong season!!!! That’s the fact then. We went in the wrong time!!! Sigh!!!! As we were feeling very stupid for not properly researching before we came, the free appetizer came and it was that big plate of Sanma 秋刀魚!! One fish for each of us as well!! It was so juicy so nice. Then we ordered boiled crab with shell already peeled. It was very sweet and yummy~!! And as we were going to order salmon and ikura rice bowl, which the friend who recommended this place had ordered and looked very good, we saw the ojisan x2 and a obasan sitting next to us ordered a huge huge crab per person!!! I knew it was a bad idea cos me and my friend were already quite full, but oh fuck it, we just ordered one to share. That is the giant crab in the picture, it is really so shockingly huge!! We used scissor to cut it, which was kinda scary at first but there was so much meat inside that we were silently eating and eating and eating and by the “3rd leg”, we were both stuffed to our throats, and still there was the “body” we had to finish. ^^;;; God, I think I have eaten my share of crab for the rest of my life. ^^;;; Then we went back to Sapporo and went up to 38th floor of the JR train station tower for a panorama view of the city and had a cocktail there. An eventful day…

The first day was hotspring hotel, near a lake only an hour away by local bus from the Sapporo Chitose airport. The scenary was lovely, especially the lake view from the open-air hotspring. The dinner in the hotspring hotel was served in the room, but unfortunately the food was no good…err….I was expecting something delicous inside the hot plate but it turned out to be two sad pieces of hard and tasteless duck meat….err….

The grilled fish set was lunch in the little souvenir shopping street by the lake before we went to the hotel. That fish is the lake’s specialty – a smaller version of salmon apparently. Hmm….salmon is much better. ^^;;
